What's The Difference?

Adhesive Materials Explained...

  1. MODIFIED POLYMER ADHESIVES

Fast becoming a solid choice for many tradespeople as a modern alternative to polysulphide and polyurethane, for their versatility to be used as a sealant if needed, the ability to be used in damp conditions with no priming required, being over paintable and available in a variety of colours, polymer adhesives are usually packaged in standard cartridges from 290ml – 310ml. (From WIKIPEDIA: also silane-modified polymers, modified-silane polymers, silane terminated polymers, etc.) are polymers (large, chained molecules) terminating with a silyl group. SMPs are the main components in solvent-free and isocyanate-free sealant and adhesive products. Typically the sealant products manufactured with silyl modified polymers have good adhesion on a wide range of substrate materials, and have good temperature and UV resistance.

  2. EPOXY ADHESIVES

A collection of various epoxy adhesives that can be used as glues for wood, metal, glass, stone, and some plastics. Epoxy adhesives are a major part of the class of adhesives called “structural adhesives” or “engineering adhesives” (that includes polyurethane, acrylic, cyanoacrylate, and other chemistries.) These high-performance adhesives are used in the construction of aircraft, automobiles, bicycles, boats, golf clubs, skis, snowboards, and other applications where high strength bonds are required. Epoxy adhesives can be made flexible or rigid, transparent or opaque/coloured, fast setting or slow setting. Epoxy adhesives are better in heat and chemical resistance than other common adhesives. The following description is from the very useful American website www.adhesives.org: Because of their ability to adhere to a wide variety of materials, their high strength, their resistance to chemicals and environments, and their ability to resist creep under sustained load, epoxies are the most widely used structural adhesive. They are available in one component, heat curing and two component, room temperature curing systems. Unmodified epoxies cure to hard, brittle solids. Most adhesive formulations include modifiers to increase flexibility or toughness of the cured adhesive. This results in bond lines that are able to resist more peel and cleavage stress as well as impact.

  3. SYNTHETIC RUBBER ADHESIVES (POLYMER-BASED)

Other than the commonly known adhesive materials, some modern products such as grab or grip adhesives etc. and also adhesives especially for bonding rubber membranes and profiles etc. are made using a blend of synthetic rubber and resin. Wikipedia says the following about synthetic rubber as a compound: Synthetic rubber, like natural rubber, has uses in the automotive industry for tires, door and window profiles, hoses, belts, matting, and flooring. Synthetic rubber, like other polymers, is made from various petroleum-based monomers. The most prevalent synthetic rubbers are styrene-butadiene rubbers(SBR) derived from the copolymerization of styrene and 1,3-butadiene. Other synthetic rubbers are prepared from isoprene (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene), chloroprene (2-chloro-1,3-butadiene), and isobutylene (methylpropene) with a small percentage of isoprene for cross-linking. These and other monomers can be mixed in various proportions to be copolymerized to produce products with a range of physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. The monomers can be produced pure, and the addition of impurities or additives can be controlled by design to give optimal properties. Polymerization of pure monomers can be better controlled to give a desired proportion of cis and trans double bonds.

  4. POLYURETHANE ADHESIVES

Traditionally thought of as either springy foam products (such as cleaning sponges and furniture filling etc) or dense finished plastic-type hard rubber such as durable elastomeric wheels and tyres (think shopping trolley or skateboard wheels), polyurethane is also used extensively in woodworking for bonding wood to wood and also used for gluing metal, ceramics, stone, glass and most plastics. Polyurethane adhesives have been the ‘go to’ material for many trades for many years and for good reason, they are a solid choice for tasks that require a strong but flexible final bond, we sell 3 distinctly different types of polyurethane adhesives, expanding foam-types that come in pressurised tin cans for extrusion by either spray nozzle or special foam gun, liquified polyurethanes in squeezable tubs (used mainly for joinery) and mastic-type cartridges, gunned out of a standard mastic gun onto a substrate for  bonding onto another or existing substrate. Here’s the chemistry techy stuff on wikipedia:

Polyurethanes are in the class of compounds called reaction polymers, which include epoxies, unsaturated polyesters, and phenolics.[12][13][14][15][16] Polyurethanes are produced by reacting an isocyanate containing two or more isocyanate groups per molecule (R−(N=C=O)n[17]) with a polyol containing on average two or more hydroxyl groups per molecule (R′−(OH)n[17]) in the presence of a catalyst or by activation with ultraviolet light.[18]

The properties of a polyurethane are greatly influenced by the types of isocyanates and polyols used to make it. Long, flexible segments, contributed by the polyol, give soft, elastic polymer. High amounts of crosslinking give tough or rigid polymers. Long chains and low crosslinking give a polymer that is very stretchy, short chains with lots of crosslinks produce a hard polymer while long chains and intermediate crosslinking give a polymer useful for making foam. The crosslinking present in polyurethanes means that the polymer consists of a three-dimensional network and molecular weight is very high. In some respects a piece of polyurethane can be regarded as one giant molecule. One consequence of this is that typical polyurethanes do not soften or melt when they are heated; they are thermosetting polymers.

Adhesives By Application

  1. BRICK ADHESIVES

For making minor repairs to brickwork and concrete or bonding or gluing brick to brick, timber to brick, metal to brick or veneer to brick for refacing or cladding, a specialist brick adhesive is required. Brick adhesive glues typically need to be used in ‘at least’ mild temperatures, ensuring that the bricks are clean, dry and free of dust. Some other brick adhesives are specifically suited to colder temperatures or for bonding damp or wet bricks together. Using the correct brick adhesive will ensure that your build or repair work is carried out with the right procedure and that the bond is strong.

  2. CONTACT ADHESIVES

Used mainly as bonding agents, contact adhesives are generally applied to two surfaces (both sides) and allowed to dry, before being pressed together to create a strong bond. Commonly used for sticking carpets, joining wood, rubber, fabrics, cork and more, contact adhesive has a multitude of bonding capabilities. Wikipedia says the following about contact adhesives:

Contact adhesives are used in strong bonds with high shear-resistance like laminates, such as bonding Formica to a wooden counter, and in footwear, as in attaching outsoles to uppers. Natural rubber and polychloroprene (Neoprene) are commonly used contact adhesives. Both of these elastomers undergo strain crystallization.

Contact adhesives must be applied to both surfaces and allowed some time to dry before the two surfaces are pushed together. Some contact adhesives require as long as 24 hours to dry before the surfaces are to be held together.[25]Once the surfaces are pushed together, the bond forms very quickly.[26] It is usually not necessary to apply pressure for a long time, so there is less need for clamps.

  3. DAMP TOLERANT ADHESIVES

Often, surfaces to bond to (or together) are damp to the touch (or even fairly wet) and for one reason or another, there’s no time or way to completely dry the surface, thus there has been an ever-increasing requirement for this type of high quality damp tolerant adhesive, for which several of the main producers of adhesives to the UK market have met. All the damp tolerant adhesives we stock come in one part cartridges to be easily applied by standard mastic sealant skeleton guns directly to substrates for bonding a variety of materials.

  4. FIXING ADHESIVES

As interior design and architecture has evolved, so too has the need for more decorative finishes and disguised fixtures and fixings. Traditional methods of attachment such as nails, screws and bolts are still widely used internally and externally on buildings but increasingly often a fixing adhesive is used as the primary or secondary method, thus masking the join and creating a more desirable finish in cladding, decorative panels and accessories etc. Using fixing adhesives to mount mirrors, extrusions and signage reeves the need for unsightly mechanical fittings and looks neater, creating a floating and flush look. Available in a range of colours and various strengths, our range of fixing adhesives come in standard mastic sized cartridges for easy application from skeleton guns.

  5. GRIP / GRAB ADHESIVES

For one reason or another, some bonding applications need rapid ‘grip’ or ‘grab’ from the either side of the substrate that’s being stuck on, between or to, this is where a specialist grip adhesive or grab adhesive is required. Although many adhesive products have some degree of instant grab, there does exist a selection of products that are dedicated to this task and as such are categorised as grip adhesives or grab adhesives. For a variety of internal & external bonding applications where an adhesive with a quick grab or instant grab is required, (both commercially and industrially), each application should be assessed for the type of grab or grip which is appropriate and the material then selected, based on this.

  6. MIRROR ADHESIVES

Usually associated with internal sealing of such applications as sanitary ware in bathrooms, shower rooms & wet rooms etc. as well as, countertops, sinks & units etc. in kitchens and other food areas, high modulus products are less able to accommodate movement compared to low modulus sealants, but will make a stiffer and more rigid final seal. The high modulus products tend to withstand repeated cleaning more efficiently than the softer more flexible low modulus ones. High modulus (or HM as it’s known)

  3. HYBRID BOND & FIX ADHESIVES

Based on hybrid polymer technologies, these types of bonding & fixing adhesives are especially useful for (but not limited to) internal works where human contact is hard to avoid whilst curing, ventilation is poor or the space is confined, due to very low odour characteristics and great movement flexibility and in many cases, an ability to tool or finish off any visible material to a neat, decorative finish. Traditionally, materials such as silicone, polyurethane and heavily-solvented ingredients have been used for such tasks, but as research develops, hybrid adhesives have now all but replaced the old technologies these products perform more efficiently at a lesser cost.

  4. PLASTERBOARD ADHESIVES

For a variety of internal plasterboard bonding applications where an adhesive is preferable to mechanical fixings such as screws or as ‘belt & braces’ when using plasterboard screws or similar, there’s a solution available in either mastic-type cartridges or expanding foam-type spray cans. Although it’s often very ecomonical, convenient and time saving to use specialist plasterboard adhesives, test areas are always recommended when using any adhesives without fixings and also a degree of curing time is usually applicable, meaning that some support is necessary for a given time.

  5. SOLVENT FREE ADHESIVES

With health & safety a major consideration when it comes to certain bonding applications, one that has always been an issue is the powerful and potentially dangerous solvent ingredients which are associated with chemically-cured adhesive materials. The odour of many of these products is notoriously pungent and can render users or other people in the vicinity dizzy or nauseous especially when used internally and/or in close proximity. Although solvent-free adhesives are often considered inferior in strength to the standard adhesive materials, as technology evolves, the products have increased in effectiveness, with some solvent free adhesives boasting impressive stats.

  6. 2-PART ADHESIVES

2-Part Adhesives consist of 2 separate components, that are mixed together, one usually being a catalyst to activate the mixture. Most 2-part adhesives come in tins, but occasionally double (twin) cartridges for a variety of bonding applications including structural glazing, stone repair and fix, and wood repair and fix. Two part adhesives are typically used for creating a very high strength bond by using a curing agent or catalyst to increase the power of the 2-part adhesive. Any accessories needed for our 2-part adhesive products, such as 2-component dual cartridge applicator guns are available from stock also.

  7. WATERPROOF ADHESIVES

Although a perfect bond underwater is a rare requirement, there are times when it’s not practical or possible to completely dry a surface or it’s just handy be able to get a job done without the hassle of drying one or both of the substrates to bond. Waterproof adhesives with outstanding performance for various watertight sealing and bonding applications, both internally and externally have become popular as snagging list eliminators fort a variety of tradespeople and DIY customers alike. Advanced technology hybrid polymer adhesives made by the biggest names in the industry are tried and tested for bonding and sticking in very damp or in some cases soaking wet conditions, are strong, flexible and some that can actually be applied directly underwater!
