What's The Difference?

Filler materials explained...

  1. Acrylic Caulk Fillers

Acrylic caulk fillers (also known as caulking or decorators caulk) is a paste-like material often used in the painting & decorating trade for filling or closing up gaps & cracks prior to painting or in many other trades where less flexibility & movement is required, as an alternative to silicone for the internal sealing of connecting joints etc.

Specialist intumescent acrylic caulk is also widely used as a component of fireproofing systems for it’s intumescent properties.

Being water-based, all acrylic caulking fillers are over paintable.

  2. Grout Fillers

Although it comes in a few different entities, in general, grout is always a dense fluid which is used to either; fill gaps between substrates on walls & floors, or used as reinforcement in existing structures. In construction, grout is generally a mixture of water, cement, and sand which is either pre-mixed and sealed in a tub or bucket or in a powdered form, to be mixed in-situ and applied whilst still runny for embedding reinforcement irons or rebar into masonry walls, connecting sections of pre-cast concrete and filling voids. Tile grouts are used for sealing interlacing joints between tiles and/or trims, corners or other internal substrates and unlike other structural pastes such as plaster, when tile grouts are correctly mixed and applied, they can form an impervious, waterproof seal.

  3. Modified Polymer Putty Fillers

Traditionally supplied and still popular in tubs or buckets, putty fillers are also available in standard-sized mastic cartridges for direct application and control from a gun. Modified polymer has become a very viable alternative to linseed oil and has many advantages over this old skool material. Modified polymer glazing putty is used for bedding glass windows, sealing gaps and joints in all external and internal frame applications, is over paintable and remains flexible, making it ideal for new installations or repairs. Many people prefer putty sealants to silicone as it’s more malleable and shapeable for larger seals such as angled fillet joints between window panes in frames.

  4. Epoxy Fillers

When considering different types of fillers, epoxies are often over-looked as they tend to be 2-part materials and are notoriously rock hard when set, but an epoxy filler could be a better option when a more solid, final finish is desired, such as timber frames or stone surrounds. Epoxy based fillers set harder than standard acrylic, water-based fillers and are therefore more robust and some even offer more flexibility than other fillers when fully cured. The dense consistency of epoxy fillers make them ideal for areas that a ‘non-pick’ fill is required. Epoxy fillers also have the advantage of being hard and stable enough, when cured, to take sanding, drilling and screwing into should fixings need to be attached onto the substrate.

The best way to determine product choice is by deciding on what it's used for

Fillers By Application

  1. 1-Part Fillers

1-part fillers normally come in tins, tubs or mastic-style tubes for filling gaps, cracks and joints, quickly and neatly in professional building & decorating and DIY building & decorating. One part fillers tend to be for more decorative applications, due to their lightweight consistencies and lower viscosity and thus shouldn’t be used in sturdy construction or repair.

  2. 2-Part Fillers

Fillers that are made up of two parts, in tins, tubs or mastic-style tubes, containing a base material and also a catalyst, which is added to the base to initiate the curing process. 2-part fillers are widely used in professional building, joinery & decorating and tend to be a more solid choice for areas subject to more wear and tear than areas where 1-part fillers are a quicker and easier option.
