A selection of technology-backed tapes for construction

A growing trend in the construction industry over the last couple of decades is the convenience and effectiveness of various tapes. We stock several types of impregnated foam tapes for weatherproofing, air sealing, sound isolation and many other tasks where a tape is required. All our tapes are manufactured to certified, industry standards by the biggest and most trusted global construction names, including Adshead Ratcliffe (ARBO), Everbuild, illbruck, OTTO-Chemie, and Sika.

What's The Difference?

Tape Materials Explained...

  1. Foamed Acrylic Tapes

Foamed Acrylic Tapes, or FAT Tapes (as they’re sometimes affectionally referred) are made from a composition of viscoelastic acrylic copolymers and monomers with glass microsphere fillers. Foamed acrylic tapes, is naturally tacky and is capable of forming structural bonds with many non-porous materials, in many instances eliminating the need for mechanical fasteners such as signage on renders or decorated walls. A select few foamed acrylic tapes from Tremco illbruck (formerly Alfas Foamed Acrylic Tapes) are available from stock.

  2. Impregnated Tapes

Impregnated tapes are normally polyurethane (or similar) foam in nature, and are saturated in various synthetic resins that then give the foams certain characteristics such as flame retardancy, UV stability, vapour diffusion and acoustic sealing, often providing expanding properties when exposed to air.

  3. Non-Impregnated Tapes

As opposed to the impregnated tapes, those that are non-impregnated have no liquids soaked or injected into them, instead, relying on the foam material itself with either a single or double sided adhesive side to seal, bond or secure.

  4. Compriband Tape

The original and still the most popular of the impregnated tapes is a trademark protected product called Compriband© manufactured by Tremco illbruck and used worldwide by a multitude of trades, especially in fenestration (or glazing) for many decades. With a massive 15 year guarantee, this foam tape is unique in that it will continually expand and contract to accommodate movement whilst still sealing the joints, in some cases providing a finished weather seal in external frame joints.

  5. Cloth Tapes

A large cross-section of our tapes category is made up of various cloth tapes, which, as the name states are made primarily of cloth materials in various thickness and strengths with different adhesives added to them for performing a multitude of bonding and fixing applications. Popular examples of cloth tapes are Gaffa Tap and Duct Tape.

Tapes By Type Or Application

  1. Aluminium Foil Tapes

Aluminium Foil Tapes are used extensively inbetween the joints and gaps in insulation panels in roof and wall applications, are ideal for use as a vapour barrier between foil faced duct sealing on all types of air conditioning components, ventilation and serve to protect wires and pipes from heat, up to a resistance of 180°C and Flame Retardant to Class O. has excellent moisture resistance, making it

  3. Double Sided Tapes

Traditionally used for simple surface to surface bonding for lightweight applications, double sided tapes have evolved into industrial strength alternatives to fixings and/or construction adhesives. Having these powerful grips attainable on a roll is often a viable option for tradespeople and DIYers like, for cladding or signage etc.

  6. Glazing Tapes

Used widely in the glazing industry for weather sealing frames and gap-filling, professional glazing tapes are available in various sizes and colours. Glazing tapes are often used for the installation of single paned glass and also double glazed units into common substrates such as timber, UPVC, steel and aluminium windows and doors.

  1. Sound Isolation Tape

Sound Isolation Tape or Sound Resilient Tape as it’s often known, is superb for the airtight sealing and sound dampening of gaps, joints and in-between panels (such as sealing flooring & ductwork etc.) Isolation tape is self-adhesive and comes in handy, easy to apply, tapes on rolls. Isolation tape is open cell foam material giving it naturally superb load & recover consistency, making it perfect for applying to the top of joists before fixing Tongue & Groove chipboard flooring etc. There’s also grades of isolation tape which work for stud work / partition wall isolation: As an acoustic isolation tape, sound resilient isolation tape is ideally used for reducing the transfer of sound by isolating partitioning walls or party walls where they may meet.

  5. Scrim Tapes

Used for decades as an efficient and reliable method of jointing between plasterboards prior to plastering. Scrim tape is fibrous in nature with adhesive impregnated into the mesh to allow adhesion directly to the face of the join. Scrim tape always comes on a roll is applied by hand with slight pressure to aid adhesion. Scrim tape is used on the joints to stop the high possibility that the joints will crack with movement in the future after plastering and decorating.

  6. Self Fusing Silicone Repair Tapes

Self Fusing Silicone Repair Tape is used to repair almost anything from an emergency repair to a water hose or air pipe to insulating electrical wires or connections. It creates an air tight, watertight seal in seconds without the need for any adhesive and it even works under water! Self fusing silicone repair tape  is an excellent electrical insulator up to 8,000 volts, it withstands extreme temperatures from -65 to 260ºC and even withstands pressure to 700psi. Also resisting petrol, oils, acids, solvents, salt water and UV rays, this type of silicone tape is so diverse that it can be used for permanent or temporary repairs to just about anything: – U bends – All pipes and hoses – Electrical insulation & sealing electrical wires & connections – Binding rope ends – Corrosion protection many more uses.

  7. Structural Spacer Tapes

Used by specialist glazing manufacturers,double-sided, structural spacing tape is available to buy by the roll for use as a spacing element tape in structurally glazed fabrications. Structural glazing tape forms an effective short-term bond between the frame and the IG unit during assembly and creates a gap of the correct dimensions. Structural spacer tape is also known by the shortened name SST,  comes in various thicknesses and widths and is approved for use with most structural silicones.
