Spotting a gap in the market for a dedicated, mastic joint sealing application company, a small family business named COUNTY MASTICS was formed close to the city, on the outskirts of North-East London, with just a single mastic gunner and bare minimum office staff. After much consistent, high quality work, word soon spread in the local London & Essex construction industry and further contracts were acquired, including such prestige projects as Buckingham Palace, 10 Downing Street, Windsor Castle and some of the early stages of the popular landmarks known today in the City and West End of London. The business went from strength to strength and additional staff were taken on for this expansion.
After 10 years of mastic joint sealing & waterproofing, County Mastics was well established in the area with a growing workforce. As the contracts were flowing, additional materials were being procured and used progressively more. This lead to early negotiations with the major sealant manufacturers such as Fosroc Expandite, Dow Corning (now Dowsil) UK distributor Geocel, waterproofing giants Sika and Adshead Ratcliffe to keep larger stocks and further product lines, quickly evolving into a small distribution division. This new branch of the business was named County Construction Chemicals Ltd. and the racks of County’s small yard in Highams Park (North-East London) were overflowing with the latest mastic sealant products in the business, servicing the fellow, specialist mastic firms plus the various other trades who used these products in their work in and around London, Essex, Middlesex & Herts.
Growth meant expansion and with that, a requirement for more storage and administrative space, so both County Mastics (contractors) and County Construction Chemicals Limited. was moved a short distance to a warehouse with offices on the edge of Chingford, within easy reach of the M25, north circular and other major motorways. More space created more potential, so a small, manned trade counter was setup to serve customers either on their way in, or way out of London and courier service was used to ship products to customers. Such was the demand for materials, the range was expanded to include specialist adhesives, waterproofing materials, concrete repair products and relevant tools & accessories.
Further expansion was inevitable as the company reached it’s 20th year in business and, with the restructure of the warehouse shelves to accept further stock, also came the recruitment of locally-based haulage drivers and a transport manager to streamline the deliveries to customers both in London and farther afield in Essex, Middlesex and Herts.
An investment in a sister company called Speed Drill, (a specialist diamond drilling contractor), was made, the adjoining unit was acquired and the warehouse structurally altered and extended to create space for separate office space and further storage for the 3 x companies. The transport manager (Tony) took over as permanent stores manager and becomes a popular and well-known face in the mastic sealant & waterproofing industry (in fact he’d still be in that role at Countys 27 years later!)
A milestone of 40 years total trading is reached, this is something we’re extremely proud of in this fast-paced age of fly-by-night companies that tend to come and go, trying to make a ‘quick buck’. After a very successful growth period in the early years from the contracting side, when we moved into distribution, our focus was always, and will always be, to keep a sensible, sustainable margin with attention to advice and customer service which sets us apart from the multi-national builders merchants. This 40th year landmark would mark a new venture for County Construction Chemicals,,, as we sowed the seeds for an entry into the world of online retail.
“It’s the future!” was the frequently heard statement from staff members, manufacturers and customers alike when any conversation involved the internet, or in particular selling online! This was always the plan for CCC Limited. but instead of ‘keeping up with the Jones’ and just start selling through Ebay or setting up a small, generic, ecommerce website to intercept scraps of business, we wanted a stable, secure, informative website that had scope for continued expanison, so we we took our time, researched the marketplace thoroughly and decided the exact business model we wanted to follow and then worked hard over the course of a year, designing and developing our E-Shop, preparing to launch on the world wide web! We didn’t know quite what to expect, but it was time……. WWW.SEALANTSONLINE.CO.UK was born!
After many years in the mastic sealants, adhesives, waterproofing, stone care and wood repair business, we like to think we have a good eye for product solutions and decided now was the time to introduce our very own labelled materials into the market. 3C Sealants came first with a carefully selected range of just a few acrylic and silicone based sealant products initially, (now with several further products added). Next came Liquid Jacket a waterproofing specific range of just a few select coating based products. Both brands’ sales have grown at a steady rate over the past 24 months to a respectable level, with tried & tested products being added to the ranges when appropriate.
With continued growth expected coming into another financial year, further investment meant some big changes for CCC Ltd. A new state-of-the-art, fully integrated Warehouse Management System to increase productivity and streamline despatch, increased social media activity on various channels, including the launch of Sealants Social, (a friendly sociable user-led group on Facebook), local team sponsorship, both physical and digital advertising, new, extensive work on all company websites; the main business (www.county.construction) the online sales E-shop (www.sealantsonline.co.uk) and the own brands (www.3c-sealants.co.uk) & (www.liquid-jacket.co.uk) and also major build improvements to our premises to maintain the high level of service and efficiency our visiting customers have come to expect of us.
