Preparation, aftercare and tidying up your work

Often overlooked in mastic joint sealing, the preparation of the joint or gap before bonding or sealing with a suitable primer or stabiliser can greatly improve the adhesion of the product, solidifying the substrate, ensuring a good tack and deeper bond for the material. Cleaners vary from tool & equipment cleaners to trusty all-rounder wipes and should have a place in everyone’s toolbox. We carry in stock, many types of primers for different surfaces and all the popular, tried & tested cleaners available on the market today, manufactured by the biggest names in the game, including 3C Sealants, Adshead Ratcliffe (ARBO), Akemi, Bohle, C-Tec Ltd. (CT1), Dirteez, Dow Corning (DOWSIL), Everbuild, Fosroc, Feb, Geocel, illbruck,  Mapei, OTTO-Chemie, Sika,Timbabuild Tork and Unger.

What's The Difference?

Primers & Cleaners Explained...

  1. Solvent Degreasers

Degreasers work to remove grease, clean and prepare substrates prior to mastic sealant, coatings or other material application. Solvents are used in degreasers typically, to dissolve the oils, machining fluids or other contaminants that might be on the surface. Our range of degreasers are packaged in various forms of application from brush on liquids to canned sprays.

  2. Porous Primers

A quick explanation from wikipedia says the following: Porosity or void fraction is a measure of the void (i.e. “empty”) spaces in a material, and is a fraction of the volume of voids over the total volume, between 0 and 1, or as a percentage between 0% and 100%. Strictly speaking, some tests measure the “accessible void, the total amount of void space accessible from the surface.

With regards to primers, surfaces which are naturally porous (such as some stone, concrete, untreated timber etc.) often require closing or sealing before a mastic joint sealant is applied to ensure that the bond can be made between the surfaces. Specialist porous primers are created from such solvents as polyorganosiloxane and isocyanate resin.

  3. Non-Porous Primers

With regards to primers, surfaces which are non-porous (such as some plastics, metals, varnished or coated timber etc.) require ‘tacking up’ before a mastic joint sealant is applied to ensure that the bond can be made between the surfaces.
